Was talking with a friend a few weeks ago about the new Scorsese Rolling Stones concert movie "Shine A Light" (which I haven't seen so can't comment), and he asked if I'd seen Stop Making Sense, the Talking Heads concert movie directed by Jonathan Demme. I had, but not since around the time it came out on video, when I was a teenager. I wasn't a die hard Talking Heads fan, but I loved the movie. So thinking of it recently, I was curious to know whether it held up over time. I got a copy and watched it.
It's still great. Aside from a couple of bits of keyboard noise that are a little dated, the songs still sound fresh. And the set up--David Byrne comes out onto a bare stage with a guitar and a boom carton and plays Psycho Killer, and then song by song the band, the instruments, and the backdrops appear--still looks clever. The brilliant performance of Once In A Lifetime usually gets all the attention, but my favorite is Life During Wartime. Do yourself a favor and watch it.
